Give Peas a Chance

28 April 2025 at 7:30pm - Quaker Meeting House, Norwich, NR2 1EW. Anne Edwards is a plant scientist with considerable expertise on  Peas as well as Trees. She is based at the John Innes Centre and one of her ‘claims to fame’ was her being the first person to identify ash dieback in the wild in UK - though an important part of her research work has actually been on ‘grass pea’.

Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus) is one of the oldest known crops. It’s drought and flood resistant, has a high protein content, requires no artificial fertiliser so can grow on the poorest of soils. But the research challenge of this ‘wonder crop’ is that it naturally produces a toxin that can cause irreversible paralysis …..!

Come join us to hear about some of her fascinating and exciting plant surprises and challenges.
