Soil Life

24 February 2025 at 7:30pm - online Zoom talk. Eddie Bailey from Rhizophylia will talk on the amazingly diverse and rich life in our soils. Like the gut, soil has its own microbiome, and keeping it healthy is essential to promoting robust plant growth and disease resistance. The Soil Food Web is the living part of the soil made up of microscopic creatures such as bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, microarthropods and fungi, as well as earthworms, spiders and insects.

Eddie's background is in Geology and he has had a life long fascination with the stuff beneath our feet. He established an organic family allotment in 1995 and after discovering the soil microbiologist, Dr Elaine Ingham in 2012, stopped digging. After studying evolutionary biology and gut microbiology, Eddie took the Foundation Courses and microscopy training at Dr Elaine’s Soil Food Web School. After just one pre-winter of mulching with biologically rich composts, Eddie noticed an incredible difference in the structure of his soil, and in April saw a storm of microarthropods on the soil surface. And worms!
